Introduction (goal, intention, purpose)

The introduction of the E-Sticker is intended to provide the basis for authorization to introduce a marking in the highway code for privileged electrically powered vehicles. The new rules are intended to provide certain advantages for local authorities. In addition to electrically-powered vehicles registered in Germany, which will be identified by means of the number plate, electrically-powered vehicles registered abroad will also be able to benefit from the advantages. The corresponding identification will then be made by means of the E-Sticker.

The 50th rule for the amendment of road traffic regulations came into force in Germany on 25.09. 2015.
The aim is to provide electric cars with so many additional advantages that a higher number of registrations in Germany will be achieved quickly.
Domestic vehicles (i.e. vehicles registered in Germany) have the chance to obtain an own, special E-license plate in order to make these vehicles recognisable
Foreign vehicles, on the contrary, which are vehicles not being registered in Germany, can obtain an E-Badge so that also these electric cars may benefit from the advantages and preferential treatments in Germany. Basis of this rule is the EU regulation 2007/46/EG.

The E-Sticker for vehicles registered abroad is only available in blue, with a diameter of 80 millimetres and a black border 1.5 millimetres thick. The large "E" with a height of 35 millimetres stands for electro and is in the colour black RAL 9005. 60 x 20 millimetres in size and in the colour pure white RAL 9010. To the left of the "E" is a small symbol of an electric car. This can also be found on the traffic signs.

The official colour of the E sticker is traffic blue RAL 5017.

Important: The E sticker has to be placed on the inside of the rear window.

In many German cities there are advantages for electric vehicles. These include, for example, the use of bus lanes or free parking. However, since each city and municipality can lay down its own rules and regulations, special attention should be paid to the signs.

Concrete advantages such as driving in the environmental lanes can be found in:

Dortmund, Düsseldorf

The electric sticker is for all electrically powered vehicles or, under special conditions, also for plug-in hybrids which are not registered in Germany.

For vehicles registered in Germany, an E license plate is provided.

In order to receive an E sticker, the vehicle must be operated purely electrically or, in the case of plug-in hybrids, the purely electrical range of 40 kilometres must be maintained. Alternatively, CO2 emissions can also be used as a criterion. This may not exceed 50g CO2 per kilometre. In principle, all vehicles must be registered abroad.

Since each city can individually determine the rules for the benefits of the E-Sticker, the penalties can also vary. The fines for incorrect parking and improper use of the bus lane range from 10 euros to 100 euros.

Important to know for foreigners:

From a fine of 70 euros or more, according to EU Directive 2011/82 of 25.10.2011 "to facilitate the cross-border exchange of information on traffic offences which jeopardise road safety", if the fine is not paid, enforcement proceedings will take place in the home country and will continue until the prison sentence is passed.

As the E-Sticker is a voluntary acquisition in order to obtain certain advantages in road traffic, there are no specific exemptions.

FAQ

Unless the engine or exhaust emission standard of the vehicle or the registration number changes, the sticker is valid for the entire lifetime of the vehicle. This means you do not have to buy a new one every year.

The E sticker must be affixed to the rear window from the inside. There is no official explanation why this is the case with the E-Sticker, unlike other European environmental stickers. We suspect that it is easier for law enforcement officers or police to check the sticker from behind when driving in a bus lane.

Yes! The sticker is only valid if it is stuck to the rear window from the inside.

The old stickers can be removed best with a sticker scraper (similar to a glass scraper) or you can carefully heat the sticker with a heat gun so that the glue comes off. Caution! The difference in temperature, especially on cold days, could damage the windscreen.

Our stickers have a 2-year UV protection guarantee - and that without any ifs and buts! Just send us a picture of the faded sticker and we will send you a new one immediately and free of charge.

The E-Sticker is such that it will be destroyed when you remove it, so you will have to buy a new one. In many cases, insurance companies will cover not only the cost of the new windscreen but also the cost of the new sticker. A new sticker must therefore be purchased.

As soon as the license plate changes, e.g. if you move house, a new sticker must be ordered.

No! For the German environmental zones, a green environmental sticker is required despite the E-Sticker.

Yes, if it is a Plug-In Hybrid registered abroad with a pure electric range of at least 40 kilometres or a maximum of 50 grams of CO2 emissions per kilometre.

In addition to the vehicle registration document in box V.7, such specific information can be found in the EEC Certificate of Conformity, also known as the Certificate of Conformity (CoC). Boxes 46.2 and 49.2 contain all the necessary information.

Incidentally, since 2005 the EEC Certificate of Conformity (CoC) has been automatically obtained in the EU from the manufacturer or distributor. If this is not available, most vehicle manufacturers can apply for a chain of custody document directly on the corresponding manufacturer's website.

Green environmental sticker

The environmental sticker was introduced on 01.03.2007 and has been mandatory in the German low emission zones for all cars, trucks and buses since 01.01.2008. The sticker was divided into 3 different colours, red, yellow and green, depending on the EURO class. Gradually, the rules of the now more than 80 zones have become stricter, so that in almost all German cities only the entry with the green environmental sticker is allowed. If a sticker is missing, a fine of 100 € is levied. Since 2018, additional diesel driving ban zones have been added, which exclude older diesels from certain routes and areas. Here the green environmental sticker is no longer sufficient.

E-Sticker

On 25.09.2015, the German law for the promotion of electric mobility was passed to equip electric and hybrid vehicles with additional advantages. As a result, domestic e-vehicles (cars registered in Germany) can be given their own special e-license plate. Foreign vehicles (all cars not registered in Germany) can acquire an E-Sticker so that they too can enjoy the benefits and privileges, such as driving in environmental and bus lanes and free parking in Germany.
